Half a Million Ringgit Race (2)

It’s apparently not many Malaysian noticed the race I blog a few days ago — even though that’s huge money to win.

May be more Malaysian has been aware of it now since TheStar has its media coverage of the winner of race 1. The Malaccan got the RM50,000 into his pocket happily.

My wife and her friend have gone to Singapore on the past Monday. It’s already on Race 2 (with award RM75,000). On Tuesday, they wasted no time to register and going through 4 stations, solving all the given riddles. It’s percepted as pretty fast as they caught up with the 1st team just within a singular day! However, the luck isn’t with them. The last station is at a place that didn’t operate on Tuesday (the rule is, you can’t get in for the hint of next check point if the participate office isn’t operate).

Waiting cautiously till Wednesday morning, they arrived the check point and found there is already one team staying in front of the gate — all wanted to step into the Bollywood Veggie at the first second it opened! Too bad, without prior experience, that one race would only consist 3 to 5 check points, they didn’t know to search for the letterbox as it’s the last check point! And it’s even worse when they finally found the letterbox, the paper inside the letterbox is LOST?! My wife called the organizer 15 minutes later and only then found nobody should take the paper away.

They got back to the letterbox later on and found the paper, probably organizer did call the other team and ask to return. However, it seem too late to them, even though following the instruction to make call and register their achievement of the final check point. Only winner go away with the RM75,000. :(

The race 3 is coming up very soon. I just hope that each and every contestant will play a fair game and uphold an athlete spirit... but then again, how many people can really be fair and upright when a lucrative prize is involved?

Could you tell me what is the answer to the 2nd clue for Race 2? The one about hip outpost

posted 05:07 PM on November 22, 2005 · comment by stuck · #

No unfair tricks here. The slip up was actually a very small technical hitch. It was unintentional. No mention anywhere that the paper was not to be removed and when told by the organisers to return, the winner did return that paper immediately and as far as I know, your wife was the 3rd person to find that letter box and make that call. Even if the winner was DQed (for removing the the paper or for whatever reasons), the second person would have eventually won. However, the rules are clear that that the 1st person to find the letter box, make the call will be declared the winner. For your information, the winner was at Bollywood Veggie on Monday and because the outlet closes on Monday and Tuesday, he had to wait for 48 hrs to claim his prize ! If only your wife had registered on Sunday, make her way to Bollywood Veggie (by 6pm) on that same day, the 75K would have been hers...hands down!! No tricks required to win the race... one needs register early, find the clues before anybody else does, get to the letter box 1st, make that call the the money is all yours !

I heard the 3rd race won by the same group of people from second race... probably, the contest is only meant for this group of people, and not for others.

Better ask your wife to come back, not to waste time and money there...

I am sorry for the late display of comments, it is just too many of spam comments nowadays and so my comments were turned on moderation -- and I forgot to check these 2 days.

Thanks for the explanation.

Gerald, how do you know the race 3 is won by the same group of people?

Actually the same group of people are belongs to one of the organizer's relative in Malaysia. They will walk away most of the prizes. Left a little for outsiders. Don't know how true is it???

Hi Gerald, this is Ruth, the "your wife" here.

I wonder if you are one of the four contestants I met in Bollywood Veggie.

If you are, it's so nice to meet you guys, someone who share the same interest with me.

By the way, I am so desparate to know the answer for the 2nd checkpoint of race3 (the one after Raffles Country Club). Just like what my husabnd mentioned in his article, we really spent more than 4 hours going round and round about the Esplanande. Would really appreciate if you r willing to share the many-sought-after answer here.

Thank you!

P/S: Anyone please stop me if there is a rule prohibits contestant to publicize the answer here.

Not too sure if your wife is taking part on the race 4 or 5? Perharps we can form a strong team to beat the rest of the people. The race 4 is so tough indeed.

Yeah, race 4 is very tough. We have a friend went to Singapore last Saturday expecting the 5th race to be started. Only then to know that the rules are changed again -- 5th race would only started after race 4 finished.

By the way, any clue if anybody found the 1st check point of race 4?

posted 01:42 PM on December 5, 2005 · comment by yowkee · #

Yeah, I knew at least a team came down all the way from KL just wanted to participate Race 5 but unfortunately after they knew that race 4 is not over yet, they got mad. Anywhere first I tought was Cheng Ho, has been search all around Marina Part but got negative answer. Got small tips from the organiser is definately not there. So, I changed my direction to "Wan Ching Yuan" where Dr. Sun Yet Sen lives there. Not Found. Last I went to Sir Stanfort Statute at Victoria Theater. Not Found also. Hey Guys, I would like to form an alliance to avoid places that we have gone. How about share share the price? Hi Malaysian "Bersatu Maju, Bercerai Roboh". Don't you get the point?

Haha, pn, this sounds like a good idea, r u going to mobilize the whole interested m'sians to register as ONE participant? or do u think the winner will be willing to share the prize with u at the end of the game?

This is an good idea indeed, but I guess it can only remain as a good idea though.

P/S: I already gave up and back to M'sia now.

Only you gave up but not me. To a Johorean, it merely cost me less than RM10 each time I go to Singapore. Here is the tips: Fill your petrol at the Causeway. 2) Don't go by second link cause the toll charges will killing you. 3) Bring some minaral water & sandwhiches from home if you could. 4) Go during weekend or after 5.00pm for weekdays, Never ever go there during office hour. An additional S$20 charges will imposed to you during these hour.

Hello everyone,

So good to find like-minded folks sharing their experiences on this race. I am amazed to hear that Race 4 is still not finished, seeing how the previous winners breezed thru Race 1 - 3 in a couple of days.

I went down to Singapore with a bunch of friends to start Race 3 and we were all frustrated by the "fruit". We stayed at one place for too long, so convinced that it was at the Esplanade. On the way out of S'pore, we decided to go back to the registration point and found that they "added" a new clue which wasn't there when we registered on Saturday morning - "Opening hours between 9am to 6pm"!!

Anyway, I went back for Race 4 with my gf and after a day's search, we stumbled on the 1st checkpoint by chance. It was so hidden that we almost overlooked it.

My gf's blog has the answer to the 1st checkpoint for Race 4 and the clue to the 2nd checkpoint -

Happy hunting!

ok. here is my plan of forming the alliance.

1) A team should be form within 10 people. Too many people will platern up the prize.
2) These 10 people must be real good in order to form a strong alliance.
3) A team leader shall be named. It could be me but not mandatory.
4) Small team will be break down into two with 5 team searching East, South, West, North & Central.
5) To be fair, who ever found the place shall be awarded 10% more than other team members.
6) Final reward will be share share lor...

Hi Ruth, I do agree that at the begining stage nobody will willing to share out their prize. But thinking of rather nobody will find the teasure and wasting petrol, rather we form an alliance and share out the prize...

Hi Peter, your idea sounds great in fact. There are many considerations to form a group of 10. If ppl are having their own transport, well i think forming 3 groups will do. The winning prize i suggest go according to the groups(Eg. 3 groups divided the prize).

I was thinking to form a strong team eversince race started but didnt really have the chance to talk and chat with the contestants.

On the other hand, full time players are required not only during the weekend but also the weekday or else chance to win is really slim.

By the way, Peter, did you take part in the Race 2? Not too sure if i met you before. You were with your wife during the race?

Well, cc, i think you should not post out the clue1 location. You should welcome those who are interested to write in to get the answer. I guess some ppl are still in the race and giving away this free answer will only create a chance for those foxery contestant(s). I myself really met such contestant who tried to frame me. What a lousy contestant.Anyhow, he walked away with prize. :( Not too sure if he will see this post or not.

posted 12:28 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Ruth · #

Jessie, I agree with you. I guess they took it away because some english-ed participants have found it very unfair that they could only gain "half" of the clues.

But in the contrary, some of chinese-ed participants from Sin Chew would say the same thing too! Many of my friends are actually discouraged and stopped to take part by the mere English clue.

I think this should be taken into consideration by the organizer next time to work out a fairer way for both chinese and english-educated individuals. And place a bilingual attendant at the event hotline if possible. :P

Take it from me, the Chinese version is really misleading. Take Race 2 Locaton 1 for example, Chinese version said we can spot a hard fruit of frangrance and see what happen in the end, the hard fruit is the rubber seed !!
Jessie, do tell how a competitor tried to "frame" you, share your experience so we newbies will not fall in the same trap also.

posted 04:53 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Law · #

What? the "fruit just so tough" refers to rubber seeds? Oh my god, no wonder I couldn't find it no mater how hard I tried. Yeah, it's really misleading. Now I have again learned something from you guys, thanks!

posted 05:00 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Ruth · #

Don't know true or not, somebody told me. It was at Kent Ridge Park where it used to be a rubber plantation there. I am as blur as you are.
Having spent so much and not getting anything in return, I am comtemplating whether or not to go for race 5 though 150K is at stake. How about you guys ?

I am in hesitation too. Not sure really want to again spend the long travelling hours just to continue the almost-mission-impossible.

Those from KL, please let me know how on earth you can put up with this time-consuming tour? Don't you guys feel frustrated or something, especially when all your effort goes in vain afterall?

Well, Ruth. I had the same thought as you. I joined from the begining till the end.Spending more than S$500for food, transpotation and misc. They purposely made the clue in a misleading way. This is part of their technique. I am sure the race 5 is much much tougher than race 4. The easiest race(1) was easily walked away in fact but not race 5. I am really doubted those who walked away the race 3 or 4. I mean the clues were all so misleading and how could you imagine a person could win in 4 days time? Maybe they are "super lucky"! I hope this could be true or else would think they might have some hints fr somewhere. Nobody would know.

posted 06:32 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Jessie · #

Heard that all four winners are very experienced treasure hunters from the same team taking turns as winners and they are all well-known in the treasure hunt circuit as hunters and organisers. May be the organisers know each other. I wonder if all these are true and with the winnings they already accumulated, $350k as their capital who is stopping them from getting the last $150k. On top of that, they have gone through all riddles and solve all the them and probably know where to look for the clue poster with their experience.

posted 09:06 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by mike · #

Actually for the first riddle in Race 3, the Chinese and English versions have some differences. The fruit mentioned in the Chinese version clearly states a tropical fruit with fragrance aroma which should be a durian and definately not a rubber seed. Maybe this was brought to the organisor's attention and they decided to take off Chinese riddle from race 4.

posted 09:26 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by mike · #

Haha, now only I know there are really professional treasure hunters out there, and people can actually make a living out of treasure hunting. Amazing, isn't it? Yet how are we going to prove that? I am wondering too...

posted 09:29 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Ruth · #

Mike, I tend to believe what jessie had just said: the organizer purposely put the riddle in a misleading way. Don't you think this is more reasonable as the objective of this game is to boost up the tourism in Singapore?

posted 09:44 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by Ruth · #

Ever wonder why they postponed Race 5 to this coming Saturday, so that these group of treasure hunters can finished race 4 and starts Race 5 together with the rest of us who had given up? May be $350k is not enough they want the $150k too.
Ruth, riddle is supposed to lead us to the checkpoint otherwise if everything else could be the answer we would have to go round the whole island and it is no longer fun. The riddle can bring us to many places but it should at least match the right checkpoint.

posted 10:40 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by mike · #

Well, I think most of us would agree the point that riddle has to make sense.

For the people who has won Race 1, 2, 3 and 4, I think they deserved it with their experience, skills , effort and the never-say-never attitude; as long as they are following rules and grab it legally. It's not fair to put up any conspiracy or finger pointing.

posted 11:42 PM on December 7, 2005 · comment by yowkee · #

Totally agree with yowkee. We must be graceful losers though I hated the term "losers". Wild accusation without evidence will not get us anywhere except being branded as " a bunch of sour grapes". In a game like this, I suppose experience and "size" do matter. The treasure hunting fraternity is abuzz with rumours that the regular hunters are forming into big groups to swarm Spore this weekend for this final 150K booty ! Instead of whining about it, why not do something about it ? Peter was talking about forming an alliance of a sort, what is happening now ?
Alternatively, with all the "masters" gone down (pun not intended), we can all opt for TOS hunt this weekend and hope to win the top cash prize which is about 1% of the 150K. Still good money there to be won and at the same time go home with a feel-good feeling for having done a good deed in this charity hunt. Think I'll do just that. For those who are interested, I think it's not too late to register log in here for more details : http://www.timeoutsolutions.com/2002/events/events_content.php?EVENTSNO=94

Can't beat them, AVOID them !!
Cheers.

Rubber seed? Does Kent Ridge Park open from 9am-6pm?

After we left S'pore, we read about this place called Jurong Birdpark, it opens from 9am-6pm. It has a thunderstorm simulation every day at noon in an Aviary of tropical rainforest setting. ("This is hardly nature's wrath")

I have been wondering if they have any coconut trees in that Aviary. It's a tropical fruit, tough, not sure about the aroma though.

posted 09:43 PM on December 8, 2005 · comment by mike · #

The War Memorial at Kent Ridge Park has something to do with the "hardly nature's wrath" and the "quiet path" is the canopy walk where the poster was placed.
To Mike, I am a recreational hunter with a profession, a professional nevertheless, but not a "professional hunter". How do you know it was Laywer Chong who won ? Was it in the news ? I must have missed it. I know Chong had a "big" group of hunters with him and if they are winners, they truly deserved it. Race 4 was really tough, I could only find Location 1 and I gave up after 3 days. When was the winner declared ? How many days did they take ? Anymore updates ? Just want to "kepoh" a bit here, I am out Race 5, my team mates has given up has abandoned me.
Good luck to you guys who're still in it.

I managed to go to Singapore on last Sunday a while to get the first clue. But due to no time to go there again, I decided to share out my thought for you all.

To me, I think the 9 celebrities is not human, so do not waste time to go to "The Heleem" or Media Corp or even Shopping Centre.

Actually I feel 9 celebrities means the 9 planets and the one sitting watching them is of course the Sun. Which dressing up them with Sunshine.

You might want to go to the Singapore Sience Centre to get your luck. If you got it, Please write to me the second clue, I will try my best to solve for you. So, good luck...

Race 5 Clue 1

The Master sits loyally on this chair,
Witness to dress-to-the-nines celebrities
Whom he attends with much care.

Tough, huh? How?

posted 01:47 PM on December 14, 2005 · comment by aladbric · #

My 5cents worth :-

1st line : Master, loyally, chair
interpretation : animal/slave/master relationships where loyalty are concern or some craftsman/designer/hairdresser or anyone who qualify as Master and sits when working. but why "loyally" is anybody's guess.

2nd line : witness, dress-to-the-nines, celebrities
Interpretation : watching something being dress nicely or elaborately as if to a ball. Here I suspect the "nines" could be canines (remember Mt.Emily that was related to that "big" word that I now forgotten how to spell), celebrities could be famous personalities, but can someone tell me if famous "dogs/bitches" qualify as celebrities :)

3rd line : he attends, much care
Interpretation : here we can rule out slave/master relationship unless they meant "he" here is that US president (forgotten which one) who took a black slave as his mistress otherwise where got master attends to slave with much care? That leaves us dog/master relationship where only master attends with much care and sits loyally when watching them being dress-to-the-nines. The other thought is a hairdresser/fashion designer taht attends the customers (celebrities) with much care.

Conlusion :
1) Look for pets (can be cats)grooming shop
2) Hairdressing / Fashion Designer shop
3) special craftsman shop
4) and the list goes on.............

My husband and I spent, in all, 4 days and N-O-T-H-I-N-G! ZILCH! Returned with tired feet, eshausted minds, flagging spirits. We are unsure whether to go back this weekend to continue. It is so vague it could be anything. If we went again, it may be wasting another 3-4 days of our time. Looks like the folks in this blog are also not getting anywhere. Thought treasure hunting clues were supposed to be solvable. It can be tough but it should not be impossibly vague. Getting these bad vibes that maybe, just maybe, the coc and organiser don't want this last race to be won! Anyone know how long this race will go on if any of the clues are not solved?

posted 04:50 PM on December 15, 2005 · comment by mike · #

If the clues are unsolvable (if it is there at all!?), perhaps you guys should write to organisers and ask them to review the case and maybe they might add in a bit more words to it to make it easier. If 1st clue is not solved by this weekend, I think they should review it otherwise this could go on till next year ! Write to organisers en bloc, it just might work. I am sure they don't want to have their people hanging on there and wait in vain, besides I am sure if this is not over, they don't get paid too ! So to request for a review is a win-win situation for all, this is only the 1st clue, I dread to think what is there to come.

Law, good idea only if no team has gone into 2nd or subsequent clues.

Been onto this since it started on Saturday. Going in and out at border is tiring. Worse when no answer in sight, even to clue 1 leh.

Funny...person who finds clue 1 must be the master. To sit so loyally onto this race. Are the rest of us celebrities? Or this means the organisers? If that is true, then they should serve us with more hints to clue 1 location!

Anyone with anymore ideas? Are the islands like Ubin and all included?

My husband and I have decided to give this weekend a miss and wait to see how the others fare. Is this going to be another wasted weekend for those down there? For a weekend read, I picked up "THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL" and this verse sprang up vividly:

They seek him here.
They seek him there.
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven, or in hell?
That damned elusive Pimpernel!

Sounds like our Race 5 Clue 1, no? It might as well have read:

They seek it here
They seek it there
Those desperate "racers" seek it everywhere.
Is it in Little India or in Clementi
[Oh where, oh where, is] that damned elusive locality!

Good luck to all of you trying out there.

Hi Fire Gazers (term used by Allan Pease for hunters).
Hmmm.. quite interesting postings. My cousin was considering to participate in this race and prompted me to this site to read Race 5. Clue 1.

I said susah lah cos it can be anywhere in Singapore. My leave also finished and my Minister of Home Affairs has already given this chaufer the schedule for the remaining 2 weekends of the year.

The b***** fool said "You cartoon ..."

I was right when I told my cousin "susah lah"
The way the clue was interpreted, the spin offs are fantastic - stars, captain, master/slave,fashion designer, hair dresser... lateral thinking. But a very big scope to cover man.

Someone mentioned to request organiser to revise clue. I think, have to kuat kuat pray lah.

Imagine the potenital mileage that have been devulged in the spin offs.

From the postings, the race must be mentally and physically taxing.

Aladbric (short for aladdin brick? - joking only lah). Your version of verse. Hmmm... good candidate to rope in by the organizer cos your riddle also points to nowhere.

Yow Kee wants to burn the location if found. Hullo Tiger, when it is found, I think the others will take leave to try to locate clue 3. You will take leave to jaga location 2 kuat kuat to make sure it don't burn. Else you will be the numero uno. Ha Ha

Hope I have not offended any one. No malice intended. I enjoyed reading this blog.

Here is wishing you guys good luck in the race.

When the race is over, will the organizer let the participants know the locations to the clues of all the races?

Would be thankful if someone can post the result or the web address of the result (clues and locations) in this blog.

Thanks. Once again good luck.

msiapenang - you at Clue 5? I might as well give up!

MsiaPenang...I also Penang, but why not able to find? No more Penang..now "pening"

You are good to reach clue 5 already! How about sharing where clue 1 is?

You are way ahead, maybe no need search anymore?? Following developments here with interest.

At least if confirmed won, then when I get into Singapore with family, we can focus on a real Christmas.

Cartoon (is this for real?) has some good ideas - may be worth checking out.

Hi, MsiaPenang. I from Ipoh. You have Clues 1 thru clue 5 or u only got Clue 5 (by chance)? Big diff, my fren! If you really have all 5 .. then u can safely share Clue 1-lah. We all here just want to be spared of further frustration!!! And you will get all our blessings to go on to win the race and deservingly so!!!

Wonderful job, MsiaPenang. You are truly THE CHAMP for being at Clue 5. SIGH! we 1 also cannot get.

However I am somewhat puzzled when I read the other's input above - I thought one had to have the Race Card stamped at a location before you can move to the next location and have it stamped etc. etc. etc. There appears to be a suggestion that you have missed Clue 1. Is this true? And is it to be 6,7 or 8 clues now? I heard from somewhere that the FAQs have been amended to say 3-8 clues. Original FAQs say 3-5 clues!

But if you have all the 5 clues, my husband and I are cheering you on.... go get them, mate.

msiapenang you have done well. So you are at the last clue and already have the lock combination for the treasure chest? You should carry on as $150k is a big sum.

I am calling you "bluff" ! You can't be so calm if you are already on clue 5. If you are there, why not share it so we can help and get you unSTUCK !

Msiapenang...Go back Penang but pass the clues to us first. We will take over and give you 50% of the winning, you stay home. Good deal? (I'll personally go to Singapore also!)

Getting to clue 5 since last Thursday is finding 5 locations in 5-6 days. Unless clues 2-5 is so easy, not like clue 1, ... you must be with one of the expert groups that has won all the other races!...or a bluffer as Law says (hope not)

yeah msiapenang, if you finally decided to call it quit. Let us continue your good work and we will comb Spore for you. I will be on leave until 26-dec-2006 and will be in Spore for the whole duration. For us guys in JB expenses are low.

msiapenang ... assuming you are for real - dont waste what you have. u r so close to it already. on the other hand. for someone who has gone so far to give up is non-typical. i talked 2 the organisers yesterday. they say nobody has gone past clue 1. i also heard that some of the clues are not even put up yet (maybe dats why u cant find answer!).how u you managed to keep yr progress from the organisers? hey fren, do all of us here one BIG favour - put us out of our misery and give us that one mercy shot - where was that b***** clue1 - AND pls, pls, pls dont tell us about the next clue - we dont want to re-live the frustration all over again! have mercy!

Wa, malichan you must have good connection with the organisers that they disclose to you the inside info (that no one has gone past clue 1).

Mike, I don't think you need to have "good connection" with the organisers to be able to speak with them. In Race 3, we were so frustrated when we found out from some locals (we both do not read or speak Mandarin) that the Chinese version of the clue for the first location after Raffles Club suggested strongly the "fruit so tough" was durian when the English version was just a "fruit so tough" with nothing to clue you in that it was durian. I found a number to call the organisers and asked them which version should I be reading - the Chinese or the English since there were subtle differences. Of course they insisted it was identical and would not say more - but as subsequent events showed, in Race 4 there were no more Chinese version. I mentioned to him that it was so tough and said that I doubted if anyone could find it. He said that there were already people who have checked into the 3rd Location.

And till now I don't even know the person I spoke with then.

hey, merry christmas everyone. Going to Singapore with family. Spoke to the organiser today and found that they may decide to end the race by month end! Anyone heard of this?

Was also told clue 1 has been broken by one team. And some racers have found other locations. Are all these true? Can anyone shed light on this?

If anyone has any other clues, would you like to post it. Would be good to see what other riddles there are, rather than working on the same old thing. Again good luck to all. Remember to give a treat when you do get it, ok?

Pointless for one to hold on to one clue here and another holding on to the other when the race is going to end by the end of this year. Interested party please contact me at 02 94214666.

If it is true that the organisor is going to end the race by end of the year. Maybe it is purposely made to be unsolvable so that they can save the last RM150k. Each race is suppose to attract 10000 participants but only hundreds participate per race and most races have the same faces. I suppose this is considered a failure.

Makes me wonder, maybe the poster for Clue 1 wasn't even there all along. 3 weeks going, nobody gets Clue 1, organisers will then have a good reason to end race by end of the year, then save 150k. All of us may have been made suckers!

Hey guys, 80 hours to the dateline, it is confirmed. No extension. No winner and STB will save RM150K. Why dont we all pool together, disclose whatever clues and locations already found and try to crack them within 80 hours and One or more Malaysians will walk away with STB's money.

I think most hunters would have given up hope. If you have solve some of the clues and know the locations but has given up hope please disclose them here and I am sure whoever win with your help will be more willing to share the winnings. Again we have 80 more hours to increase our nation's wealth by 150k.

Spoke to organisers and confirm that someone is already solved all the clues EXCEPT 1. Gerald, is that you? If so wish you luck with that one mysterious clue.

Not likely to solve all clues in the next 3 days, so good luck to the rest. If I do stumble upon this number one answer, will surely sound the alert.

Looks like the race is drawing to an end, and perhaps without any winners...how sad.
